The objective of this study is to develop the optimal tool path generation strategy in rough cutting operation of sculptured surfaces. First, three machining processes such as primary cutting, intermediate cutting and trim cutting are suggested and the tool path patterns are developed for each process. Then, the methods to find the optimal tool path patterns with the proper tool sizes are developed to reduce the production time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulation study.
