This paper presents a technique for modeling of fixture-workpiece contact interaction and optimizing the fixture layout by minimizing the workpiece deflection due to clamping forces under 3-2-1 fixturing scenario. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the locators and workpiece are modeled as deformable solids, and their interface is modeled as a surface contact pair. Using a simplified engine block as an example, the initial fixture setup consists of three planar locating pads on the primary datum and two clamps on the top surface of the workpiece. The optimal positions of three locators are determined using nonlinear FEA and nonlinear programming. Then, two of the three planar locators are remodeled as locating pins resting on planar pads and feasible manufacturing holes are built on the workpiece to ensure total restraint.
