This paper presents an experimental study of chip temperature measurements using infrared (IR) imaging system. A tool steel was machined with PCBN and ceramic tools at different cutting conditions. An IR system was installed above and toward cutting zone during experiments. The IR system consists of imager and processor. From the experimental results, it is observed that temperature varies within the chip, and that IR images give information on the type of chips produced and on the direction of chip flow during machining. The result shows that the system has potential for the development of efficient chip control scheme and efficient cooling method.
