Hobbing process development is changing rapidly due to the introduction of new tool materials, advanced thin film coatings and associated changes in the hob design characteristics. The possible improvements in productivity need to be evaluated on a cost per part basis relative to tool costs, machine costs, and coolant costs. This paper includes a discussion of: 1) review of the generating process; 2) an analytical method for evaluating process parameters; 3) new tool configurations; 4) tool accuracy improvements; 5) material developments; 6) coating developments; and 7) dry hobbing process development.
