High speed cutting (HSC) has been found of increasing importance for industrial application in the last years. In this paper the HSC is characterized by suitable parameters. Process values in high speed machining are determined and evaluated to be a basis for a detailed characterization of the cutting forces and the chip formation. The behaviour of cutting forces, material flow, and material shear over the cutting speed is analyzed. The result shows that the HSC-range can be characterized by constant cutting forces, segmented chip formation, low chip compression ratio, and minor depth of deformation.
