This contribution describes the transport of heat into the workpiece when grinding a nickel-based alloy. A simulation of the grinding process based on the finite element analysis calculates the temperature field distribution in the workpiece. The percentage of heat flowing into the workpiece during grinding is determined by means of the FEA simulation. For this purpose, an infrared picture of the temperature field distribution taken at the side face of the workpiece is compared with the temperature field distribution obtained from the FEA simulation. The effect of different feed rates on the temperatures and the temperature gradients in the workpiece is presented. The influence of the material properties on the temperature field development in the workpiece was investigated by means of a comparison between a steel and a nickel-based alloy
