A new cutting method developed by us, the step vibration cutting method, is applied to small hole tapping of difficult-to-cut materials. We focused our efforts on a small cut tap with diameter equal to or less than 3 mm. This method has been found to reduce the tapping torque to two thirds to a half that in the case of conventional tapping, thereby improving the workability of the tapping process itself and the precision of obtained threads as well. We also demonstrated that the use of this method could increase the fracture limit of the cut tap itself.
