Numerical methods, such as Finite Element Modelling, are being used to model various manufacturing processes, including gas metal arc welding. Even though today's models are very complex and quite sophisticated, there is still the need to verify numerical results by experiments. In Gas Metal Arc Welding processes the parameters of greatest interest are the time-dependent temperature and displacement fields generated by the weldment. A measurement system that combines both full-field temperature and three-dimensional displacement measurement capabilities is presented. The system can accurately measure surface temperatures and displacements at any given location on the surface, even in the presence of high temperature gradients and large object motions or deformations.
