Pulsed ECM has been shown to be an effective method for removing the recast layer left on dies and molds by EDM while maintaining the geometry of the surface within close tolerances. However, the effect of PECM pulse parameters on surface finish, and the effect of the PECM process itself on mechanical fatigue behavior, remain for the most part unexplored areas. This paper reports on recent efforts to examine the role played by process parameters on the surface finish of hot work tool steels polished by PECM, and also data on the fatigue life of specimens prepared by PECM, EDM, and surface grinding.
