Tool wear is significant to economic viability and reliability of cutting processes and is therefore used as a decision criteria for process assessment and design. A brief test method is presented for determining time- and material saving optimum cutting conditions based on measurements of tool wear for a small number of cuts. The cuts are performed using different sets of cutting parameters, for each of which relative statements concerning tool-life are derived by extrapolation of the measured wear progress. These statements, together with the requirements for the cutting process, determine the optimum cutting conditions. Experimental realization and confirmation of the test method is performed using exemplary combinations of workpiece and tool material.
