This research work presents an experimental comparison of a fixed-gain controller and three adaptive control schemes for force control in end milling. A validated model of the end milling process is used to design three of the controllers. The four controllers are then evaluated for various transient and steady state cutting conditions that includes a change in the axial depth of cut during a slot cut, change in the radial depth of cut, and entry into an existing slot. Results of the experimental study are presented and indicate differences in the performance of the investigated controllers.
