The first in a series of two papers presents a modeling framework to relate environmental factors to product and process planning decisions in surface finishing. In this paper, an integrated model of the grinding process is presented that evaluates the energy utilization and waste mass flux for different surface and process specifications. In particular, waste mass of workpiece particulates, wheel particulates, and liquid, aerosol, and vapor fluid losses are modeled. A journal bearing design test case is presented to illustrate the relationship between functional specification and environmental impact.
