A new cutting method called step vibration cutting is proposed to eliminate the problems experienced with the conventional low-frequency vibration cutting method, i.e., the likelihood of the chipping of the cutting edge when used for boring and tapping of smaller holes, and broaching of hard and/or difficult-to-cut materials. To check the utility of the method we first investigated the machinability of such materials, and found that the method could indeed prevent the chipping of the cutting edge. We also demonstrated that the present method could be successfully applied to a practical thread tapping process.
