Cutting fluid waste from the machinery industry imposes a serious threat to the environment and the health of workers and its proper treatment and disposal is expensive. In this paper, a clean and environmentally safe, yet highly economical and productive, cooling method for milling processes is investigated: cryogenic cooling the cutting edge using a low flow rate of liquid nitrogen through a specially designed cryogenic rotary coupling. The overall test results show that cryogenic cooling improves tool life to a great extent in all materials tested, 16% to 500% tool life improvement over emulsion cooling method.
