Grinding generally is used for finishing of hard and brittle materials; in the course of which great quantities of coolants and lubricants are supplied to avoid thermal damages of the component. Because of lawful requirements and increasing costs for maintenance and disposal an economical and ecological optimization of grinding processes needs to be developed by the reduction or avoidance of coolant supply. Within this contribution the technological circumstances and requirements for a reduction of coolant supply in grinding will be discussed.
