Titanium nitride (TiN) has long been the workhorse of PVD coatings along with titanium carbonitride (TiCN) and chromium carbide (CrC), but recently developed and released coatings like titanium aluminum nitride (TiALN) and tungsten carbide carbon (WC/C) have greatly expanded the areas PVD coatings can affect. We are now able to efficiently machine materials such as aluminum, cast iron and powder metal (P/M) parts and can do this at faster feeds and speeds; as well as possibly eliminating the need for coolants. This presentation will discuss all the PVD coatings and their properties, along with recommended applications and case histories to support them. It will also deal with the newest CVD coating, diamond.
