Loose abrasive processing is a traditional machining method. Metallic loose abrasives were used to drill hard rock in the oil industry several decades ago. Today this method is still used to saw granite blocks into slabs in the stone industry. Lapping is a common loose abrasive process. Compared with other machining processes, lapping can obtain the best flatness, very good precision and excellent surface finish. So it is widely used in the machining of precision ceramics, glass, and metallic parts.
