How grinding coolants are applied is critical in the manufacture of low cost, high quality components. The purpose of this paper was to conduct an end user evaluation of the Coolant Application Optimizer (trademark), a tool to quantify and improve coolant application efficiency and consistency. This tool's calculated coolant application efficiency was verified by comparing it to the measured effective flow rate of coolant through the grinding zone and the peak temperature of the workpiece. Measured effective flow rate and workpiece temperature were in good agreement with the Optimizer's calculated coolant application efficiencies.
