This paper describes an on-line learning model for getting correction factors of cutting parameters developed by using an ART1 neural network. The model has been used in the Automatic Decision-making and Learning System for Determining Tools and Cutting Conditions Embedded in CNC Systems of Machining Centers (ADLS-CNC) developed by the authors at Tsinghua University to enable the system to improve its performance automatically on-line, and finally to get satisfactory parameters applying to particular workshop conditions. It is also expected that ADLS-CNC can provide an effective approach to improve the low adaptability of cutting-parameter generation techniques in the CAPP systems of today.
