This paper presents an analytical evaluation of temperature distribution of milling tool with finite difference method. The evaluation of temperature requires thermal characteristics such as heat generation and heat transfer coefficient. With the help of conjugation direction method, thermal characteristics can be identified so that calculated temperature on milling tool may agree with practical one which can be measured with infrared radiation thermometer. It is confirmed that thermal characteristics identified are appropriate by some experiments. Then the variation of temperature distribution of milling tool with time can be evaluated by finite difference method using thermal characteristics identified. The effect of cutting conditions on tool temperature is clarified by comparison of temperature distributions in some operations.
