To optimize the use and design of band saw blades, it is valuable to model the mechanics of band sawing. Following existing analyses of orthogonal machining, an etiolate of band saw cutting force has been developed. This model yields the magnitude of force and the sensitivity of force to sawing parameters (work material shear strength, coefficient of friction, band feed rate and speed) and geometric characteristics (rake angle, pitch, set profile). Experimental results validate the model.
