AN INTELLIGENT SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED FOR CONTROL OF CYLINDRICAL PLUNGE GRINDING OPERATIONS. THE SYSTEM IS SMART ENOUGH TO ADJUST ITS OPERATING PARAMETERS FROM PART TO PART TO MINIMIZE CYCLE TIME, SUBJECT TO PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS, IN RESPONSE TO IN-PROCESS AND POST-PROCESS MEASUREMENTS WHICH CHARACTERIZE THE PROCESS CONDITION AND PART QUALITY. AT THE END OF EACH CYCLE, THE UNCERTAIN PROCESS PARAMETERS ARE ESTIMATED TO UPDATE THE MODEL AND PROVIDE A MORE ACCURATE ESTIMATION OF THE OPTIMAL OPERATING PARAMETERS FOR THE NEXT CYCLE. THE INTELLIGENT SYSTEM IS EXPERIMENTALLY DEMONSTRATED FOR INTERNAL CYLINDRICAL GRINDING.
