This article reveals the phenomenon of forming inertia, a concept seemingly opposite to the concept of spring back. It means that a section can continue to deform for a distance after passing the centerline-centerline plane. Though the section will spring back thereafter, it may also be over-bent, or say, over-deformed in some cases, especially when such low-yield strength materials as annealed low-carbon steel or aluminum is used. This is explained from the point of view of mechanics, revealing its relationship with strip material, set-up roll gaps, top and bottom roll angle clearance etc., and discussing its application.
