Conventional quenching of some steel parts in water, brine, oil or polymer solution can cause distortion and in some cases non-uniform hardness or even cracks. Quenching in molten salt minimizes distortion and cracks. It also produces more uniform hardness and more consistent physical properties. Recent advances have made salt quenching safer, nonpulluting, fully automated and programmable. These features in conjunction with its adjustable quench severity make salt quenching fast, continuous and economical. It is successfully applied by the manufacturing industry in carrying out processes such as austempering, martempering and their numerous modifications and these applications continue to grow fast.
