Flow stress models such as the power law have been found to be inadequate for the accurate prediction of rolling loads using the finite element method (FEM). During thermomechanical processing, strain, strain rate, temperature microstructure and chemistry, along with processing conditions, are known to have a significant effect on the flow stress. This paper presents a microstructure dependent flow stress model that takes into account the effect of metallurgical phenomena such as strain hardening, dynamic recovery and recrystallization on the flow stress of microalloyed steels. This paper also presents a computationally efficient procedure for applying the flow stress model to multi stage hot deformation processes.
