A continuous production line making products that are roll formed and welded closed combines a number of processes: prenotching, roll forming, welding, cooling the profile, and cutting off the individual pieces. The roll forming of the product is accomplished in four separate steps: forming the profile, presenting the shape to the welder, final shaping, and straightening the part before it is cut off. Each welder type, the subject of a previous paper, has special requirements that dictate how the material must be roll formed and how the profile is to be positioned. This paper discusses the four roll forming steps by treating each as a separate process, and relates them to the requirements of the welding systems that are used in lines that run coiled strip.
