Manufacturing welded products from coils of metal in a roll forming line can combine seven or more processes: prenotching, forming the profile, presenting the shape to the welder, welding, cooling the profile, final shaping and straightening, and cutting off the individual pieces. Welding is just one of the processes, but it is the first one that must be considered because it determines how the material must be roll formed. The selection of a welding system, or whether an existing welder is suitable, is determined by the metal, the desired line speed, and the final roll formed shape and weld location. This paper describes the various welders that are used with coil-run roll forming lines and gives guidelines for their application.
