The new steel described in this paper was designed to eliminate all the expensive heat treatments, which, traditionally, must be applied for high strength, safety-critical parts of low-alloy, medium carbon steels. This steel, called BHS steel, is a microalloyed, multi-phase low carbon steel that is controlled rolled in the steel plant. The high levels of strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance when coupled with very good cold formability indicate that this new steel is an excellent candidate for both replacing steels in current components and allowing new, lighter components to be designed and produced with a high degree of safety.
