THE RATIONALE, FUNCTIONALITY, GRAPHIC USER INTERFACES, AND ARCHITECTURE OF A MODULAR, FULL-SCALE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. USE OF A REAL-TIME EXPERT SYSTEM SHELL LED TO A BROADENING OF THE SCOPE TO INCLUDE REAL-TIME INTELLIGENT CONTROL OF COMPOSITES PROCESSING. IMPLICATIONS OF THIS KNOWLEDGE- BASED INFRASTRUCTURE FOR CONCURRENT ENGINEERING AND COMPOSITES CIM ARE DISCUSSED.
