A nodal separation criterion has been evaluated utilizing an elemental power minimization. This method has been illustrated for the preform design required producing a simple compressed cylindrical disk. The preforms generated were then used as input in a commercially available forward incremental code to determine if in fact the desired finish shape was achievable from the preform. The final shapes were obtainable from the preforms with substantial geometric accuracy.
