This paper presents an overview of the potential causes for parts distortion and cracking during heat treatment in high pressure quench vacuum furnaces. Advances in gas quenching technology and equipment have kept pace with a growing number of parts and materials requiring vacuum heat treatment. Gas quenching in vacuum furnaces is considered an alternative to the oil or salt quench traditionally used for tool steels, oil hardening and alloys steel. Ability to control speed and uniformity of heating and cooling in the vacuum furnaces minimizes distortion. This paper also presents types and causes for distortions.
