Coagulation and lime softening unit processes are typically used to remove dissolved organicmatter (DOM) and hardness from raw waters. However, a combination of cation and anionexchange resins could potentially accomplish the same removals simultaneously in a single unitprocess. In this work, anionic magnetic ion exchange (MIEX) resin, which has been shown toeffectively remove DOM in previous research, and a newly developed cationic MIEX resin areused to treat raw water classified as groundwater under the influence of surface water. DOM andhardness removal in raw water treated with only cation or anion MIEX resin was compared toremovals achieved with combined ion exchange treatment. From these results, it is concludedthat combined ion exchange is an effective treatment process for simultaneous removal of DOMand hardness. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
