Many advances in molecular microbiology should be considered as research tries to gaina better fundamental understanding of fecal and indigenous waterborne pathogenecology. With that understanding, and links to mechanistic models of their fate andtransport, radical approaches to the provision of safe water should become evident. Anexample that focuses on Legionella is discussed in the paper. Policies should stimulate this managementapproach, and ultimately new regulations can mature that utilize the knowledge gainedthrough the application of current and evolving microbiological methods. Includes abstract only.
