This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and control strategies. The overall study objective was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of using granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption forcompliance with the trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) limits of theStage 2 Disinfectant/Disinfection Byproduct Rule (D/DBPR) by the Orangeburg Department ofPublic Utilities (DPU) water treatment plant. Specific objectives were to examine the roles ofthe following factors in DBP precursor removal: type of GAC; empty bed contact time (EBCT); and, prechloramination before the GAC filters. Study conclusions indicate that: the GAC tested in this study (F400, HD3000, and GAC830) showed similar performances; the main reason for GAC showing similar DBP precursor removal is probably due to their similar surface areas in pores > 1nm; GAC/post chloramination combination produced significantly lower levels of both THM and HAA than GAC/post chlorination; increasing empty bed contact time increased the operation time of the GAC filters; GAC post filters with an empty bed contact time of 10 min. (after the existing filters at the treatment plant) followed by post chloramination can maintain THM and HAA levels well below the Stage 2 D/DBP Rule requirements up to one year time period; prechloramination prior to filters did not have asignificant impact on the TOC removal by GAC; and, pilot-scale testing is recommended for further evaluation of the GAC technology prior to full-scale application. Includes tables, figures.
