The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Homeland Security Research Center, working with laboratories and subject matter experts (SMEs), recently completed optimization andsingle-laboratory verification of a culture-based method for E. coli O157:H7 in environmental matrices (e.g., drinking water, surface water). The draft Standardized Analytical Procedure (SAP) that was evaluated during initialphases of the study was adapted from Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 21st Ed. Subsequent analyses also included adaptations from the journal article "Evaluation of Techniquesfor Enrichment and Isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from Artificially Contaminated Sprouts" by Weagantand Bound.
