  • Ceramic MF/UF Membranes: Are Difficult Applications Their Sweet Spot?
  • Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009
  • Publisher: AWWA

$12.00$24.00

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of using microfiltration/ultrafiltration (MF/UF) for pathogen and turbidity control, and the advantages and limitations of ceramic membranes. A pilot program at the South Bakersfield Water Treatment Plant is presented that had the following components: water source from theKern River via multiple canal systems;feedwater usually below 1.0 ntu,but flashy (storm events);challenging conveyance systems -risk of periodic organic spills; taste & odor events; MF/UF selected as filtration process based on pastsuccess;pilot test with three membrane systems -GE Zenon (40-50 gfd), Siemens CP (45-55 gfd), andNGK Ceramic (107 gfd);allow Pall to bid based on past Cal Waterexperience at two other WTPs on the Kern River; and, pretreatment alternatives. Pilot results are provided for ceramic vs. polymeric MF/UF, and for a challenging surface water. A relative cost example is provided for ceramic costs relative to polymeric costs. Includes tables, figures.
