Between 1999 and 2003 Colorado State University (CSU) instituted a backflow prevention program with two main purposes: to protect water mains from backflow and backsiphonage; and, to protect drinking water in buildings from cross-contamination. CSU spent more than two million dollars installing backflow prevention devices and reconfiguring plumbing at select buildings. This paper discusses a backflow incident at CSU that was caused by connecting an industrial process to a water system; however, because of CSU's cross-connection control program, drinking water supplies were protected.
