The objective of this research was to determine the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potential (DBPFP) from dissolved organic matter(DOM) isolated from nitrogen-enriched wastewater effluents and algal impacted waters. DOMwas isolated and fractionated from five nitrogen-enriched waters, three collected in the field andtwo generated in the laboratory. Samples were fractionated by size and polarity. In total, 34isolates were subjected to free chlorine, chloramine, or a combined oxidation DBPFP testing.Emerging nitrogenous DBPs (haloacetonitriles [HANs], halonitromenthanes [HNMs],nitrosamines, and cyanogen halide) were the focus of this study and regulated trihalomethanes(THMs) were also determined to provide a reactivity based comparison. Analytical methods are given for DOM fractionation, DOM dissolution and water quality, and DBPFP and DBP measurements. Includes 11 references, figures.
