This powerpoint presentation presents the Spectral FluorescentSignatures (SFS) Technique as a tool that not only rapidlydetermines dissolved organic carbon (DOC)concentrations, but fractions that may be targetedindividually, and it can also predict THM formationpotential (THMFP). Analytical methods include the following:sampling - Delaware-Raritan Canal and its tributaries incentral New Jersey in October 2006 through June 2008;organic carbon analysis - to measure the actual values ofDOC and six DOM fractions;natural organic matter fractionation - to separate six DOMfractions from sample for measurement and further analysis; fluorescence spectrometry - to obtain spectral fluorescentsignatures for original samples, separated fractions, andprepared mixtures; and, THMFP - Standard Method 5710B, and EPA method 551.1(GC-ECD). Statistical software includes the following:Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) - SAS was usedfor model building, automation, validation, and allthe advanced statistical post processing;Minitab 15 - Minitab was used for preliminary datatransformation and simple matrix operations; and,Microsoft Excel - Excel was used mainly for datastorage, simple mathematical operations, and finalmodel testing. Presentation summary and conclusions indicate the following: unique fluorescence properties including peak location foreach of the six DOM fractions were identified and utilized inbuilding of the model;several different techniques from analytical chemistry andstatistics have been innovatively applied in developing themodel, such as scatter removal, analysis of peaks, design ofmixtures within reported range of natural occurrence, andPCR; model has ability to predict the DOC, six DOM fractions, concentrations, and THMFP using single SFS; and, faster performance and improved reliability with wide rangeof applicability in comparison with the earlier models. Includes tables, figures.
