The goal of this study was to providethe military the capability of individually producing microbiologically safe drinking water from any freshwatersource that may be available to them during deployments. The performance of an Individual Water Purifier (IWP) must be thoroughlyevaluated to allow informed product selection, and to protect the health of the soldier. Execution of thisprotocol for acceptance of an IWP is administered and monitored by a Government Review Agencydesignated by the Department of the Army Office of the Surgeon General. Vendors who successfully test tothis protocol and submit the results to the Government Review Agency are then eligible to market thosedevices to military organizations as having met the requirements for military use by the Army SurgeonGeneral. The U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion andPreventive Medicine (USACHPPM) has directed testing to this protocol for validation as well as to challenge commercialoff-the-shelf IWPs of varying technologies to military requirements. Results showed that manufacturerstated technology alone is not a good indicator of device effectiveness, and therefore the need exists withinthe military community to inform potential users of devices providing the greatest health risk reduction. Inresponse to this need, the USACHPPM developed a user-interactive website to provide deployed personnel,as well as the general public, with the tool to make informed decisions and reduce waterborne illness.
