By combining ballasted flocculation and lamellae settling, the ACTIFLO® process hasbecome an efficient and competitive clarification process widely known for its compactness.Further reducing the footprint of the global process is still possible by focusing on theflocculation stage. The flocculation tank can therefore be modified in order to reduceretention time and energy costs. Before decantation, water will flow into a single tankinstead of two as previously designed. The new flocculation tank, the TURBOMIX®, shortensthe retention time down to 3 min compared to 8 min as before. This paper presents trialscarried out on an ACTIFLO® Turbo pilot unit. The TURBOMIX® process has been tested fordrinking water treatment. The performance of the TURBOMIX® enables the client to applyballasted flocculation at rise rate equal to 80 m/h. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
