The fate and transport of 26 common human and veterinary antibiotics, four anti-inflammatories(ibuprofen, diclofenac, ketoprofen, and naproxen), the anti-epileptic drugcarbamazepine, and a widely-used X-ray contrast agent, iohexol, in a small, urban watershed thatis impacted by wastewater discharges from three communities that include major hospitals,several large residential nursing homes, and several research centers. The watershed ultimatelylinks an impacted reservoir to a downstream drinking water source, and the levels of thesepollutants in the aqueous phase have been evaluated in order to begin a comprehensiveecological risk assessment associated with residual pharmaceutically active compounds insurface waters.
