This manuscript evaluates the historical results of total coliform monitoring and then exploresthe ability to detect statistically significant results based on the available data. Basic datacollected from federal, state and utility sources are summarized. The data collected are used toexplore the differences that would be detectable based on the number of samples collected.Theoretical and empirical data are evaluated for effects of increasing the sample volumes that arecollected from the currently specified 100 mL samples up to 2 liter samples (based on actualsamples and to 20 liters (based on statistical bootstrap modeling). Using existing dataalternative indicators of microbial condition are also evaluated. Includes 15 references, tables, figures.
