This slide presentation outlines a study on the characterization of manganese oxide coated filter media from nine water treatment plants. The scope of the presentation includes: oxide coating (mg metal/gram of media);size and uniformity (sieve analysis);specific surface area (m2 per/gram of media); and, Mn uptake capacity. Conclusions were:Metal Coatings - >0.01 to 120 mg Mn per gram of media, present on sand and anthracite media, significant variation, comprised of Fe, Al and Ca,consistent ratios; and, Metal Coatings - Mn Uptake increases with Mn coating,"diminishing returns",rough, porous nature, high surface area, inaccessible adsorption sites, encapsulated particles,Mn uptake as-is = 70% of regenerated. Includes tables, figures.
