The abstract of this slide presentation includes these bulleted points: ultrafiltration (UF) membranes will remove all microbiological species as well assome viruses;UF membranes are not an absolute barrier to viruses and humicmaterials;natural organic matter (NOM) is of great importance in the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs);NOM removal optimization may be achieved by pretreatmentwith coagulants and/or powdered activated carbon (PAC) or post-treatment with granular activated carbon (GAC);the Clyde Potts UF Membrane Plant has achieved additional total organic carbon(TOC) removal and has produced low DBPs through the combineduse of UF and post-GAC, than with just UF alone. The summary of the project presented in this slide presentation includes these points: NOM is of great importance in the formation of DBPs;NOM removal optimization may be achieved by pretreatmentwith enhanced coagulation and/or PAC orpost-treatment with GAC;GAC has been shown to be effective when used in combination withUF in removing additional TOC and producing low DBPs for asource water with low TOC;post-GAC vs. pre-enhanced coagulation, less money in the long run;no need for flocculation/sedimentation basins;no coagulants to feed continuously;no coagulation chemistry to worry about;no residuals to dispose of; and,% removal efficiency probably based on source water qualityand EBCT. Conclusions were that:UF is good for removing TOCand producing low DBPs for asource water with low TOC; and,UF + GAC is better for removingTOC and producing low DBPsfor a source water with low TOC.
