The MIEX dissolved organic carbon (DOC) process was developed specifically to remove natural organic matter(NOM) from raw water sources and improve the efficiency of coagulant and disinfectantchemicals. The lower NOM and reduced disinfectant demand following MIEX treatmentresults in reduction in the formation of disinfection byproducts. NOM is also known toreduce the effectiveness of granular activated carbon (GAC) for the removal of problemcontaminants by blocking or utilizing adsorption sites. It is anticipated that the reductionin NOM resulting from the MIEX DOC process would also improve the performance ofGAC. A pilot plant study was undertaken to directly measure the impact of MIEX pretreatmentusing both coagulation and microfiltration on GAC performance. Includes 10 references, tables, figures.
