The formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) is a public health concern. An important wayto evaluate the presence of DBPs is in terms of total organic halogen (TOX), which can be furtherspecified into total organic chlorine (TOCl), bromine (TOBr), and iodine (TOI). The formationand distribution of specific TOX in chlorination and chloramination of natural organic matter(NOM) isolates in the presence of bromide and iodide ions were studied. Chloraminationproduced significantly less TOX than chlorination. TOCl was the dominant species formed inboth chlorination and chloramination. TOI was only produced in chloramination, notchlorination, due to the absence of HOI in chlorination as a result of oxidation of iodide throughto iodate by chlorine. The effect of iodide ion on the formation and distribution of specific TOXin chloramination was also investigated. The formation of TOI increased as initial iodide ionconcentration increased, with a maximum of ~60% of the initial iodide ion incorporated intoNOM and measured as TOI. Iodine incorporation in NOM was consistently higher than bromineincorporation, demonstrating that HOI is more reactive and competes well against HOBr forreactions with NOM.
