This paper discusses findings made during development of a dead-end main management review for City of Calgary Waterworks as part of the AwwaRF Project #2875, Development of Distribution System Water Quality Optimization Plans. This AwwaRF project included three participating utilities: Calgary Waterworks; City of Everett; and, Greater Cincinnati Water Works. The focus of this project was to develop plans for maintaining water quality throughout the system. The information contained in this paper was developed as part of this AwwaRf project. Most drinking water systems have dead-end mains present in their distribution systems. However, this remains an area in which there is little documented information on how drinking water utilities manage these. This evaluation was conducted to accomplish four objectives: learn more about policies and practices of other utilities;establish industry Best Management Practices (BMPs) for dead-end mains;compare Calgary's practices with BMPs and recommend ways to address dead-end main water quality; and, develop a recommended method systems can use to assess their own dead-end main practices. This paper includes a review and summary of: North American requirements and design policies related to dead-end mains; accepted industry guidance; and, a survey of six North American utilities on dead-end main practices.Additionally, this paper presents a case study developed from the work conducted for the AwwaRF project. The case study describes Calgary's dead-end main management and includes a discussion of recommendations made for Calgary in managing their dead-end mains, including policies with respect to dead-end main rehabilitation and installation of blow-offs Includes 6 references, tables, figures.
