This paper briefly describes the construction of the City of Winnipeg ultravioletlight (UV) reactor installation, and discusses the onsite validation activities andperformance testing ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ the first time this has been carried out in Canada on a full-scaleoperational installation. The City of Winnipeg completed theinstallation of a UV disinfection system atits Deacon Booster Pumping Station inDecember 2004. The currently unfilteredraw water is chlorinated at the Shoal Lakeheadworks before it flows to the DeaconReservoir. The water is chlorinated twicemore, and fluoride and orthophosphateare added before the water is delivered tocustomers. A new water treatment plant(WTP), currently under design, willminimize potential health risks, meetconsumer expectations, and comply withincreasingly stringent water qualityregulations. The UV facility has been installed ahead of construction of the new WTP tominimize the risk posed by Cryptosporidium. The UV facility was designed to meet current (unfiltered) and future (filtered) water quality(i.e., UV transmittance [UVT]) and flow rates. The Calgon-supplied system consists of sixSentinel 48-inch UV reactors and related control systems. Nine 21.6-kW lamps are providedin each reactor in clusters of 3lamps each. Each reactor's capacity ranges from 82 MLD at theunfiltered design UVT of 75 percent to 120 MLD at the filtered design UVT of 90 percent. These capacities are based on a minimum UV dosage of 28 mJ/cm2, with a safety factor of0.7 to allow for lamp ageing and some lamp fouling. The onsite performance validation testing revealed that the UVT of the raw water was about78 percent. The challenge microorganism was MS2 phage, and the UVT adjusting chemicalwas Super Hume™ (potassium humate salts). The validation testing was completedsuccessfully on February 8, 2005, and the UV facility was recommended for acceptance by theCity. Includes tables, figures.
