The United Kingdom analyzes more samples/month than the projected needs for the U.S.capacity to implement Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2);moreover, they have a few number of laboratories than the U.S.. The US EnvironmentalProtection Agency spearheaded a technical workshop to observe how United Kingdom laboratoriesmanage high volumes of samples for Cryptosporidium analysis. The United Kingdom institutedcontinual Cryptosporidium monitoring in finished waters in 1999This collaborative venture consisted of LT2 Analysts visiting two United Kingdomlaboratories, United Water and Thames Water to discuss the following issues.Training and Retention of Personnel: initial and on-going training, trainingprocedures and requirements for both processing and microscopy, how is trainingworked into the everyday processing of regulatory samples, cross-training vsspecific task training, discuss successful strategies used to help retain trained andexperienced analysts.Lab Space and Equipment Issues: multiple production lines, multiple work stations, processing of multiple samples at the same time, remodeling of space, storage ofequipment and supplies.Sample Logistics: arrival, log-in, storage of samples prior to processing, sampleflow through laboratory.QA/QC: observe and discuss how required quality control (QC) documentation and samples areincorporated into the workday and week, reporting and data validation, how is QCincorporated if an event occurs.Staff Schedules/Rotations: observe and discuss staff utilization in multiple workareas, discuss functionality of schedules and rotations with analysts.
